JBoss 4.0 introduces AOP

The early release of JBoss 4.0 introduces an Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP) architecture to this open-source web application server that enables it to provide a wide range of services, including object persistence, caching, replication, acidity, remoteness, transactions and security to plain vanilla Java classes.

What JBoss 4.0 does with AOP comes very close to what MS does with .NET (Marc Fleury is known to admire the .NET architecture), and leapfrogs all the commercial J2EE servers.

JBoss accomplishes its AOP magic by performing byte-code manipulation at class loading time, introducing 'interceptors' that provide the services listed above. The way these interceptors are attached to the code is through metadata and declarative programming using XML descriptors.

JBoss 4.0 AOP is conceptually similar to aspect-oriented programming introduced by the AspectJ Project.
