open-source C#

Miguel de Icaza and Brian Jepson have published a detailed description of Mono, an open-source C# and .NET implementation, in the latest Dr. Dobbs Journal (January 2002). Highly recommended reading.

The C# Compiler and class libraries are written in C#. Miguel wrote the compiler. It builds using Visual C#.

The JIT engine is written in C and is still under development.

Mint, or Mono Interpreter, is a Mono run-time which runs slower than the JIT but is more portable. It currently runs under Linux.

Gtk#, a set of bindings for the Gnome GUI toolkit Gtk+, is under development.

SharpDevelop is an IDE written in C# which is under development.

You may download a snapshot of the full source for Mono.

See the thread on C# books for some recommended reading.

What was ironic about the DDJ article was that on one of the opposite pages there was a full-page ad for FLEXlm, one of the toughest license managers around. "Monitor or enforce compliance with license terms to reduce unauthorized use" the ad reads.
