Java Application Generator 3.0

The Finalist IT Group has released version 3.0 of their open-source J2EE Java Application Generator - JAG. Although they don't mention MDA, JAG certainly looks like an MDA tool.

The architecture of JAG is strikingly similar to that of AndroMDA, another open-source MDA tool.

The basic design of both tools is:
1) read an XMI file produced by a UML tool such as TogetherSoft or Poseidon for UML
2) produce Struts and EJB code using Velocity templates that output Java classes with XDoclet tags.
3) generate J2EE artifacts from the XDoclet tags

One curiousity about these two products is that their relationship may be closer than just functional similarity. Upon inspection, the license for JAG has a clause in it that identifies portions of its software as being copyright by "Matthias Bohlen and the UML2EJB team". Matthias is the primary author of AndroMDA...

Wink

As a developer of JAG, i would like to comment on the licensing issue. We indeed make use of the AndroMDA libararies. We use their MDR (Meta Data Repository) Facade to instantiate a UML1.4 model. Why write it again if it has already been implemented by AndroMDA? That is actually the only part where the codebases match.

Cheers,

Rudie Ekkelenkamp.
