Best summary of Stallman's GNU Project

If you want to understand the history and philosophical underpinnings of the Free Software Foundation's GNU Project, the best place to start is Richard Stallman's speech Free Software: Freedom and Cooperation, given at New York University on 29 May 2001.

The GNU project is responsible for a large portion of what is today called GNU/Linux.

The audio for this speech can be found at:
http://www.fsf.org/philosophy/audio/audio.html#NYU2001

The audio is in Ogg Vorbis format (a format unimpeded by patents).
One player that you may use to listen to this format is Winamp:

If you prefer, a transcript of the speech is also available:
http://www.fsf.org/events/rms-nyu-2001-transcript.txt

This speech was delivered at NYU soon after Microsoft's Craig Mundie delivered a speech attacking the GNU GPL license and announcing MS's shared source philosophy:

Linux guru Alan Cox has also published an excellent essay responding to Craig Mundie's speech.

Our readers are urged to follow this debate since it will likely have a huge impact on the software development community over the course of this coming year.
