here comes MDA

The OMG has been skillfully planning its next stage of architecture for UML-based development.

Called Model Driven Architecture or MDA, this new architecture is an all-encompassing framework for platform-neutral development.

Essentially, MDA can be described as a way to isolate IT shops from the constantly changing and evolving middleware platforms (CORBA, EJB, .NET). How is this accomplished? Largely this is still a goal but the vision is to provide mapping rules for each platform which will allow tool vendors to provide an UML-MDA platform-neutral design environment along with mapping modules for the individual platforms.

This is nothing new to Real-Time UML tool vendors who have been dealing with code generation for multiple platforms for a while.

There are lots of questions we have about MDA, not the least of which is whether it will ever be commercially viable. Next is whether it will be overly complex. Do developers really care about platform neutrality? (Weren't CORBA and Java supposed to give us that?? ) More to come...

The OMG has prepared extensive presentations on MDA including an executive overview, FAQ, slides with accompanying audio, and specifications, all of which can be found at the main MDA site.
