Cool Borland Together 2006

Consistent with an old TogetherSoft tradition of announcing new versions of Together at JavaOne conferences, Borland pulled through with a long-awaited announcement of the complete rewrite of Together for UML 2.0, MDA, Java 1.5 and the Eclipse platform.

Together 2006 Architect edition is entering beta-test now and will be available in late August. Will it live up to the impecable tradition of Together Control Center? If any readers test drive the new Together, please post impressions here!

See the attached press release for more details. Although the press release is very MDA-centric, the new version brings many more exciting features to the table, including reverse-engineering of sequence diagrams from execution traces, a feature for which we've been waiting for a long time.

Finally shipping and available for download as a trial from the Borland website.

So far, our testing has gone well and it looks like Borland finally succeeded in a complete rewrite of Together for the Eclipse IDE, Java 1.5, and UML 2.0 - without sacrificing any functionality.

Here are exported images based on reverse-engineered code from the Object-Oriented Calculator:

Borland has published an excellent Macromedia Flash demo of some of the advanced features in Together Architect 2006:

1. BPMN and BPEL - The OMG published BPMN 1.0 in 2004 as a notation for modeling business processes. TA 2006 lets you model a business process graphically using BPMN and then generate the supporting BPEL script from the diagram.

2. MDA - TA 2006 has full support for OCL and QVT for generating model and code artifacts from Together models.

3. Audits and Metrics - Similar to previous editions of Together, although the ability to create custom audits and metrics by using OCL is a powerful addition.

The OCL support, including a syntax aware editor, looks extensive and will likely spawn an entire new generation of power applications that can analyze and transform models in ways that until now were just promises.
